So Beard calls me Monday and let me know.
"I got third place in Kumite!"
I said, "Oh man, that's awesome - I knew you'd do great."
"Out of three people!"
I said, "...."
Thankfully he was laughing about it. It appears that our training regimine didn't work out the way we expected. We trained so that he had the cardiac fitness to go forever, but the matches were only two minutes! He needed to have a plan in place and execute immediately instead of waiting to see the weaknesses. Ah well, next time.
The cold I've been fighting off for the week finally found me. Running nose and stoned out of my gourd from Sudefed. Weeeeee.

Since I'm not in classes for a bit and feeling better after a bit of illness it was time to jump back into the morning workout routine. ...

There are exceptions to every rule. However, exceptions are rare. Tonight I was filled with dread and excitement about returning to class. ...

What is it with colds!
You, Mrx, Me!
We shall begin the martial arts cold-a-thon!
:)
To add insult to injury I was afraid to skip days at the gym and today was max day. So I went to see if I could do 315 on the flat bench. No go! I did get 295 which was a life record for me. I still have several weeks before vacation to see if it's possible. Sudefed and Nyquil are not my friends.
me gf's out with a cold too.
295 on the bench. Each time, I'm thrown back.
I haven't even got that much weights at home. I do everything in my mini-dojo and do my stuff. But basic benching is done with 115 lbs. 4X15 reps.
I feel weak! ahha.
Reminds me of a time in college, I was training with my current training weight (125) and a football player came along and asked me if he could use my setup. I said ok. He proceeded to doing 15 reps like if he was lifting a feather. It was his warmup.
LOLOLOL.
He proceeded to some ridiculous amount of weight.
I never got much upper-body strengh.
be well!
I thought I was doing great last night and actually stayed up till 10. This morning I've made a step back in illness. Nose running like a fountain.
The whole heavy lifting is new to me. My normal workout weight is 135 to 175. However a brief foray into the 200s made one of the local heavies come my way and attempt to be motivational.
Normally I wouldn't care too much, but it makes me feel like I'm shooting for something instead of simply maintenance. The trick will be maintaining at higher level now.
I notice that the older the sensei's get the less muscle mass they carry. I think they can move faster because they don't have to enervate more tissue, but that's just a layman's guess.
Ugh! That dreaded sudafed high. I don't know which is worse, the runny nose or the zombie-like state the sudafed puts me in.
"I notice that the older the sensei's get the less muscle mass they carry. I think they can move faster because they don't have to enervate more tissue, but that's just a layman's guess."
There is also the way they move. I just realized I moved wrong. I've been moving wrong for the last two years now.
They say that as time goes and as economy of movement is discovered, karate training is not enough. So instead of moving heavily, they move faster and need less effort to do so. In turn, they develop less body mass.
I remember the first time I did the Shihowari kihon. There is a turning movement with a punch. At first, I struggled to keep balance and hit with a little strengh. I couldn't do it more than 4 times in a row without being either very dizzy or out of breath.
Then, from I don't know where, a very hard strike came out on that punch. I was stunned!!
With lots of practice, I slowly came to realize that I did things wrong. And that with a little hip movement, twisting the feet a bit, relaxing the shoulders, I could move faster and use less energy. But that's over a year or so.
What will it be in 5-10-15 years? I find the less energy I want to use, the faster I move. But then again, I'm really not that fast. Even slow compared with others.
I still have so much to learn...
cheers!
